For the essay lovers' holiday gift list, picks from Amy Wright and Rigoberto Gonzalez

Amy Wright:

Matthew Gavin Frank's Preparing the Ghost: An Essay Concerning the Giant Squid and its First Photographer (Norton, 2014) has been a terrific inspiration. My food choices this year have been heavily influenced by Foodopoly by Wenonah Hauter (The New Press, 2012), and The Insect Cookbook: Food for a Sustainable Planet by Arnold van Huis, Henk van Gurp and Marcel Dicke (Columbia University Press, 2012). I'm also deeply admiring Judith Kitchen's The Circus Train (Ovenbird Books 2014). May her generous spirit rest in peace.

Rigoberto Gonzalez:

Judith Kitchen's THE CIRCUS TRAIN

This dazzling book-length lyrical essay was Judith Kitchen's final publication before her death in November of this year. It's a meditation on the body and its memory, one woman's affection for the magical, natural and troubled world, and the affliction that would eventually consume her.
